Our guest on this episode of the SAGE Think Difference podcast is none other than CSIRO Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley FAA FTSE.
Dr Foley reflects on her career in physics and how CSIRO is embracing diversity to solve the greatest challenges of our time. “You need to have the greatest minds to embrace human potential,” she says, and that means embracing human differences.
CSIRO’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategy is at the heart of their entire operations. “We are really aware of having gender equality in everything we do,” says Dr Foley. The organisation received its SAGE Athena Swan Bronze award in December 2018, and Dr Foley is leading the implementation of its Action Plan.
Dr Foley is CSIRO’s first dedicated Chief Scientist and one of Australia’s top applied physicists. She is known for her significant contributions to the development of field-deployable superconducting devices that locate valuable mineral deposits, as well as high-temperature superconductors. She also actively promotes and supports science across the wider community.
In May 2020, Dr Foley was recognised as one of our nation’s most distinguished scientists with her election to the Australian Academy of Science.
